Caprivi Recording Field Trip
In January - February 2018 Petra Ballings and Bart Wursten spent 2 full weeks in the Caprivi area of Namibia. The purpose was to record and photograph as many species as possible in as many different Quarter Degree Squares as possible.
A total of 1902 records were made during this period, covering about 460 taxa.
Most of these records are now online while some still need further confirmation on ID.
Nearly 4000 photographs were taken and are in the process of being made available online.
Prior to the trip the National Botanic Research Institute in Windhoek was visited and through data, kindly made available by the Institute staff, as well as taxa recorded during the trip, the total number of taxa in our database for the Caprivi flora has risen from 889 to 1,244.
As a result of this first major work both the Caprivi Checklist as well as the distribution coverage have become much more comprehensive.

About the website
This site provides information about the flowering plants and ferns of Caprivi, sometimes known as the Caprivi Strip, which is part of Namibia. This is one of 6 e-floras which cover the Flora Zambesiaca area in south-central Africa. Five countries are now covered, namely Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe together with this e-flora about the Caprivi Strip.
The principal contributors to the site are Bart Wursten, Petra Ballings, Meg Coates Palgrave✝ and Mark Hyde.

Flora Zambesiaca

The Flora Zambesiaca project has been the principal source of information for our project, particularly the keys, descriptions and images. It has been an invaluable tool to enable us to identify the many plant specimens we have recorded and collected and has been one of the most important sources to teach us the botanical skills we have acquired. Further information about Flora Zambesiaca can be found at this link. The picture shows the much-used and now dog-eared volumes which accompany us on our field trips. |
